It is believed a divine presence rests within the Western Wall. Hand-written prayers on paper (kvitlachim) are inserted in the cracks between the large limestone rocks in the hope that G_d may answer them. More than a million prayer notes are placed in the crevices of the wall every year. Annually, before Rosh Hashanah and Passover, the notes are cleared out to make way for new prayer notes.
