The ancient synagogue floor which has been dated to 300 BCE was only recently discovered and is perfectly preserved. The design is exquisite. A carpet of geometrically precise intersecting circles made up of four-petalled flowers surrounds a coloured mosaic square of exotic birds. I had to hold a large tripod with a Phase One system on the one end as far over the floor as possible to achieve the top view – with a few understandably anxious archaeologists sweating until I was done. I had to use the 10 second timer and hoped to G_d that I got the symmetry correct within the frame.
