Hurva Synagogue: HaRova/Jewish Quarter, Old City, Jerusalem

The Hurva Synagogue was originally built in the early 1700s and after laying bare for over a century was resettled in 1837 by members of the Ashkenazi Jewish community known as the Perushim. It was destroyed by the Arab Legion during the fighting in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. The new synagogue was dedicated in 2010, built to evoke its neo-Byzantine 19th century architecture. My perspective from high up in the dome shows the active yeshiva and synagogue below. There are still ancient ritual baths below the synagogue which date back to the 2nd temple period.
