The Red Canyon is a geological curiosity known as a slot canyon. The Shani River that meanders through the Eilat Mountains in southern Israel would have eroded away the sandstone rock faces over thousands of years revealing layers of sedimentary rock. The sandstone is embedded with iron oxide which emits a gorgeous palette of pinks, oranges, yellows and reds. I composed this photograph around noon so the overhead sun infiltrated and illuminated all the detail. Achieving balance with overall exposure was critical. This particular photograph creates an impacting and arresting piece when enlarged to two metres/ 79 inches in width and floated in a frame that lends itself to your interior décor.
